2023 Award Winners

Danielle Goldtooth, Owner, Dii Iina Culinary

educates Arizonans about sustainable food systems and traditional Dine (Navajo) farming practices by creating culinary experiences featuring traditional and local foods through her catering business.

Richard Morrison, Water Policy Thought Leader

creates innovative approaches to Arizona water sustainability issues using collaborative approaches informed by his life experiences as a former Navy fighter pilot, lawyer, farmer, businessman, and Episcopalian priest.

White Tank Mountains Conservancy

facilitates bipartisan solutions among conservationists, developers, and cities to balance impending development with environmental collaborations to preserve the wildlife habitat.

Hasrah Thomas, Director Realm 4 at Arizona State University

directs a team creating fully immersive and interactive virtual reality experiences to teach concepts including ecology, sustainability, and biodiversity preservation through Dreamscape Learn.

ART

  • Lauren Strohacker, Eco-Political Visual Artist whose work emphasizes the non-human in an increasingly human-centric world.

  • Lauren Hayes, Sound Artist a musician and improviser who builds and performs with hybrid analogue/digital instruments.

FOOD SYSTEMS

  • Justin Rohner, Agriscaping Technologies + has been helping people around the world grow their own healthy, fresh foods at home for more than 25 years.

  • Jared Lupin, Executive Chef of Cherish plus runs a traveling ramen "shop-up" that helps the community and people understand the gastronomy around them, including local and vegan foods.

  • Kim Haasarud, Garden Bar + features local ingredients in her neighborhood "garden to glass" cocktail bar located in an adapted 1914 California bungalow in the Roosevelt South neighborhood.

  • Jennifer Jenkin, Desert Seed Resource Center a nonprofit organization that is creating a thriving, regionally appropriate native plant market for the desert southwest.

  • Zach Brooks, The Arizona Worm Farm provides educational workshops about how to plants in the desert avoiding biocides and toxic chemicals to create life-filled, healthy soil.

  • The Farm at Castle Hot Springs, cultivates and harvests over 150 crops on 3 acres to feed guests and share information about growing food in a unique, closed-loop ecosystem.

LAW AND GOVERNMENT

  • Katie Callaway, Partner at Fennemore Craig who practices estate planning and probate law and is collaborating on creating new legal pathways to facilitate animal property ownership.

  • Isaac Kort Meade, President of Environmental Law Society at ASU Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law leads a dedicated group of future attorneys in exploring topics centered on the nexus of human activities, social and environmental justice, and the law through topics including urban farming.

  • Casey Clowes, Candidate for Tempe City Council an attorney and community organizer running on a platform to increase the city’s sustainability efforts and combat the climate crisis on the local levels.

CONSERVATION

  • Devon Suarez, Suarez Forestry, LLC owner of a family-owned business focused on promoting the health, management, and sustainability of forests in Northern Arizona through time-honored stewardship.

  • Liberty Wildlife Rescue envisions a time when wildlife is recognized as an integral part of our natural worl through wildlife rehabilitation, natural history education, and community conservation services.

WRITING

  • Ron Brolgio, Professor at Arizona State University + who writes books and essays on nonhuman phenomenology and animal studies, including the recent book Animal Revolution.

  • Environmental Desk, The Arizona Republic provides award-winning coverage of state environmental issues, including the environmental effects of the border wall and resurgence of jaguars in Arizona.

EDUCATION

  • The Sustainability Committee, Phoenix Country Day School promotes multifaceted sustainability education and initiatives such as eliminating single-use water bottles and growing school gardens.

  • Flora Tromelin, FCT Strategies LLC the former Chief of Protocol to the U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco, a role in which she facilitated meetings between the French and American Secretaries of Energy and Environment during the Paris Climate Agreement (COP21).

  • Tara Denzin, GinZen Yoga, connects people with themselves, their communities, and the natural environment through innovative yoga practices.

ART

  • Amery Bohling, Amery Bohling Fine Art inspires her viewers to cherish and preserve our natural landscape, and its animal inhabitants, by reflecting the beauty of the American West.

FOOD SYSTEMS

  • Kaylee Colter, Eight Eight Acres is a landscape architecture who models natural systems to create colorful residential landscapes focusing on landscapes incorporating native plants and wildlife needs.

  • Flower Street Urban Gardens simplifies and demystifies the process of organic growing for home gardeners by providing vertical gardens that address the issues of growing in Phoenix summer heat.

  • Clint Culbertson, Galaxy Gardens incorporates gray water systems into residential landscaping to create sustainable yards filled with wildlife-friendly yards featuring native plants.

LAW AND GOVERNMENT

  • Rana Lashgari, Arizona Municipal Strategies, a municipal lobbyist who leverages her relationship and experience to advocate for animals and a greener, more sustainable future.

CONSERVATION

  • Chris Parish, President & CEO of The Peregin Fund works to save the California Condor through partnerships with a wide range of constituents to represent the need of birds, many of whom he knows personally.

  • Southwestern Wildlife Conservation Center provides native wildlife who lose their homes to development, or are found injured or abandoned, a space to recover and grow where their wildness is nurtured and encouraged.

  • Salt River Wild Horse Management Group gives iconic wild horses a voice through a mix of public engagement and legal action, making it illegal to harass wild horses and requiring humane management.

  • Desert Botanical Garden helps people learn about the beauty of the desert by showcasing 50,000 + plants in beautiful outdoor exhibits across 140 acres.

Re-imaginers and finalists were selected by a panel of sustainability experts, following a period of open nomination. This award is sponsored by Professor Karen Bradshaw, a wildlife advocate and the author of Wildlife as Property Owners, a New Conception of Animal Rights. Professor Bradshaw is using her platform as the 2021-2022 Desert Institute for Humanities Fellowship to identify and amplify the efforts of local thought-leaders in sustainability who are radically reimagining the human relationship with nature.
